Whenever a champion loses a title without being beaten in the ring, it creates a split in the title’s lineage. While a new “official” champion will be crowned, the former champion still has a claim to being the unbeaten “linear” champion, and in sports like MMA and boxing, these splits are usually easily resolved by having a bout between the two. Resolution of these issues isn’t always quite so cut and dry.
